My Friday Memory

Let's talk school lunches, shall we?

I loved school lunches.  While most people make bad jokes and complain about school lunches, I loved them.  Yes, I'm weird...we're beyond that now, aren't we?

The leftover burgers with gravy on them became salisbury steak.  Yummy.  The pizza was square and soft and could be folded nicely.  Yummy.  The bread with peanut butter was a tricky situation....the peanut butter was on the bread in a little ball (from a melon baller) and was tough to spread without ripping the bread, but I managed...Yummy.

I liked the jello, even though it had shredded carrots in it (to meet the vegetable requirement, I'm sure.)  I loved the pears...ahhhh, the pears.  I loved the "spaghetti red" even though it was NOTHING like the real spaghetti that mom made.  Some times we had no-bake cookies....ahhhh, it was like Christmas!

Many people gripe incessantly about school lunches, but I loved them.  I can't think of a single thing that I hated...honestly!  Oh, and on very special days?  We had Jello Pudding Pops.  OMG!  That was like a piece of heaven.

I didn't get caught up in what table I sat at.  I didn't care what the cool kids ate.  I didn't give a rat's ass...just so I got some of that wonderful food.  MMMmmmmmm.  I even volunteered in the lunch room for 2 years.  Those women were the best, and I enjoyed living their lives for an hour a day.  Golly, I'm a sad individual, huh?  I don't care!  I loved it, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

I'll trade you my jello for your salisbury steak!

It must be genetic; your dad says he loved school lunches.  I might have if I'd ever tried them.... I preferred to walk to a drug store or truck stop and get junk food.

I loved school lunches too.  They put enough peanut butter on our sandwiches to make three more.  My absolute favorite though was mashed potatoes with gravy.  I couldn't get enough of that.
I remember in middle school wearing a hair net so that I too could help serve lunch.  Those were some fun times.  :)

You're kidding, right?  PLEASE tell me you are kidding!  I gag at the memory of that awful, sloppy crap.

Oh man....I LOVED the hot turkey sandwiches smothered in yellowish gravy. I used to wish I could get two of them! The only thing I didn't like was the "smokey links" because one time when I ate them, I threw up. LOL....never could stand the smell of those things again! Yeah, there was just something about those lunches! ;o)

back when we went to school, they cooked good food.  Remember the chili pie & apple crisp.  That was the best apple crisp ever.  Maybe it had to do with those lady's cooking for ever for the school.  Amber even loved the WN school lunch.

I loved my school lunches too!  I even really loved the burgers, and I'm sure they had soy in them.  We often had a white cake with chocolate sauce!!! YUM!  And they made these huge chef's salads that were absolutely delicious!! If you're weird, you're not alone!

Hi Rachel! My name is Rhianna and I've been lurking here for awhile. I have enjoyed reading your journal. I worked in customer service for about 5 yrs so I feel your pain. And I loved the school food. There were these rolls that were the best ever. But then the health class did a nutrition eval for them and they turned out to have like 40 grams of fat and a billzillion calories. SO the school made the cafeteria make them healthier. Boooo! Anyway!

ok...ok...my favorite was.....the ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes with meat sauce over it.  I still make it for dinner for MY kids!

and mostaccoli .... I used to make a 'spaghetti sandwich' whenever we had it....  they give you bread with butter anyway... <g>

More importantly, though....the thing I remember with the most fondness was Daisy and Lulu...the cafeteria ladies.  What sweethearts they were....

LOL I am one of those cafeteria ladies although I am not sure the kids love me. School lunches are soooooo much better than when I was a kid (long ago) AND I get to eat for free now!
